Mykonos Old Town

If you're jetting off to Mykonos any time soon, a visit to the old town should definitely be on your ”must see' list. From quaint windmills to historical castles, this place has something to suit everyone's tastes. We've created a must-see list to ensure you enjoy your time at Mykonos Old Town and get as much as you can from every minute of your holiday to Mykonos.

Manto Square

In the middle of Manto Square there's a monument erected to Manto Mavrogenous. She's a symbol of the Greek War of Independence. Not only did she serve as dragoman of the naval fleet, but she also donated her vast fortune to the War of Independence. However, she's most loved for convincing Turkey to retreat from Mykonos, and is a local hero.

Matogianni Street

Wander through the stunning whitewashed buildings draped with brightly coloured flowers, in search of a bargain or two. Matoyianni Street is a paradise for shopaholics, with cute boutique stores lining either side of the road. There's plenty of beautiful shops to browse, and from high-class designers to quirky handmade jewellery you're bound to find something to suit your style. Nearby, you'll also encounter three identical 18th century wells and plenty of historical looking homes. If you're a culture vulture, you'll be in your element in Mykonos Old Town.

Maritime Museum

If you're interested in Mykonos' naval history, this is the place to be. You'll find beautiful antique navigational devices, model ships, old maps, and a garden filled with large anchors and the most prominent lighthouse on the Aegean coast. What this museum lacks in size, it certainly makes up for in intrigue. If you have an hour free, it's certainly worth a visit. This museum's open daily between 10.30am to 1pm, and then again from 6.30pm to 9pm. It only costs three euros to look around; ideal if you want something to do on a budget.

The iconic windmills

From around the 16th to 19th century, these beautiful windmills were used to grind wheat and barley in the old town of Mykonos. These rustic looking whitewashed windmills are beautiful, making them an absolute must-see.

Little Venice

Pay Little Venice a visit, its full of picturesque medieval buildings, making it the perfect place for soaking up Mykonos' rich history. Plus, the Church of Panagia Paraportiani is also located there. This brightly whitewashed structure is a beautiful example of traditional architecture, and is a great photo opportunity too. This neighbourhood is one of the most romantic places on the island. The sea views are breathtaking, especially if you catch sight of one of Crete's magnificent sunsets.

Mykonos Folklore Museum

This museum showcases antiques from the 19th century. You'll see everything from vintage furniture to ancient tools. Arguably, the historical photographs are the most interesting, as they literally give you a snapshot into Mykonos' history.

Agios Nikolaos Church

This church was built before 1320, and at the time was the most important church in Mykonos Old Town. It's a gorgeous chapel standing on a tiny rocky island. It's not easy to access, but it's stunning, making it well worth the effort.
